Some 500 army personnel took part in the Samarahan segment of the 29th SEA Games torch run here yesterday.Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah flagged off the runners near Batang Sadong Bridge.
Also present was Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin who described the Sarawak leg of the national run as “very, very successful.”
“Today’s theme is ‘With the Army’. We have 500 army personnel with us today, 350 of whom will run from here while 150 at the finishing line,” he said.
Khairy joined the run up to the first phase before handing it over at the finish to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Dato Sri Nancy Shukri.
He believed the torch run would serve its purpose of bringing the community together.
“We aim to raise the spirit of all Malaysians through the torch run before the opening ceremony in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 19.”
“The torch run will traverse the country starting from Johor, then Malacca, Sarawak, later to Labuan, Sabah and end in Kuala Lumpur,” he added.
The torch will eventually be brought into the Bukit Jalil National Stadium to light up the Games cauldron at the opening ceremony.
